Brief political rant

November 11, 2008 by Andy Martin · 2 Comments

Last week during the election, we took the kids to the happiest place on Earth, Disneyland in Anaheim. We made sure to do early voting to do our part as citizens of this country, and here in Arizona one of the items on the ballot we felt strongly about was Proposition 102. Basicially the same thing as Proposition 8 in California, though gay marriage was still not allowed here so it differed in that it wasn’t reversing it like Prop 8 was doing. Having friends and coworkers that are gay, I was against 102. Even if I didn’t have friends and coworkers that were gay, though, it’s a matter of civil rights and I would still be against it. While we were at Disneyland the day before the election, there was a really cool bit of skywriting, kind of dot-matrix style. As it cleared some of the trees and we could see it, we could read “Save Traditional Marriage”. Sick that they would do that directly over Disneyland, who also opposed Prop 8. The Governor opposed Prop 8. Apple opposed Prop 8. Yet both it and Prop 102 here in Arizona passed. This morning, I saw a video that I think says what I’m still feeling about that much better than I could ever express. Read more

Ninja cat

I know, it’s not tech or gadgets or sci-fi or anything like that. Every now and then, though, you see something that is just so completely awesome that you have to share. By the time you see ninja cat, it is already too late, you don’t stand a chance.

First goal achieved, on to the next step

If you go back to my first posts and my “about” page, you can see my first goals that I set for myself for this blog. Remember, I’m just an average geek putting this together in his spare time. I can’t really compete with the Gawker media sites out there, they are simply in a completely different class than I am at this point. So, not really knowing what kind of traffic I was going to get, I set my first goal at 1,000 page views in a calendar month, thinking it would take a few months to ramp up enough. Check out the graph after the jump and see what happened here. Read more

Happy Mac is happy

Time to get back to work. We got the wife’s iMac back from the Apple Store yesterday afternoon, I spent last night after the kids conked out restoring her Time Machine backup and getting her up and running. So, today I kicked off my restore so I can get my files and desktop back. Expect more blog work tonight, maybe even the new logo if I can get my Photoshop work done. More work over the weekend, most notably my review of the new “Clone Wars” movie (taking my awesome Star Wars Padawan daughter to see it tomorrow). I’m no snobby movie critic, I usually like what they seem to hate. However, I’m also a huge Star Wars fan and have been listening to other fans’ reactions to what George Lucas is trying to feed us. It can go either way, as far as I’m concerned, should be a fun movie experience, especially seeing my Padawan’s reaction as a whole new generation of Star Wars fan.

Sad Mac is sad

Well, I had high hopes of doing more blog work tonight. Unfortunately, we have a Sad Mac and my wife will be using my Macbook Pro to run her eBay business while her iMac gets a new Bluetooth board installed. Ok, not a real “Sad Mac”, but pretty rough since she uses a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and they would just die at any given time. So, as I write the post from my iPhone I’m restoring her Time Machine backup to my Macbook Pro, which means I’m more or less without a system tonight.

Maybe I’ll play some “Smash Brothers Brawl” to placate my soul…

Welcome, but pardon the mess

Welcome to Geek Talks Tech, my new blog where I will attempt to wax eloquently on topics of tech news, gadgets, sci-fi, movies, basically all kinds of geek stuff. Just kicking it off today, I will slowly be ramping this up and changing up the design now and then until I get it where I really want it. If I waited until then before I launched, it would never go live. Come back, and you’ll see diferent parts change up (gotta change that background, for instance) and new features as I figure out how to code them. I’m planning on at least one post per day, so subscribe in your favorite RSS feed reader for updates, unless you like just stopping by when you want to.

Comments and suggestions are more than welcome, try to keep the critism constructive (no “Your page sucks, dude” without telling me why it sucks and what you’d suggest to make it better, please). Comment here, email me at andy@geektalkstech.com or even hit me up on Twitter. Hope you enjoy my take on tech.
