About Me
Thanks for stoping by my little place on the web where I can talk about all sorts of geeky things. As an avid reader of io9 (sci-fi), Gizmodo (gadgets), Kotaku (gaming), and listener of TWiT (tech news), I’ve always wanted a place where I could put some things that interest me along those same lines. Hopefully I can bring something new to the discussion, as the last thing that I want is to simply be a clone of those sites. I’ve been a digg user for a while as well, but I’ve been moving away from there lately as finding good stories or news there is getting harder and harder. So, hopefully I can bring you, the reader, something new you might not have seen yet, or a new take or commentary on something you might have heard about. One day, maybe I can even be on TWiT as a guest. We can all dream, can’t we?
Some history on me, I am a child of the 80’s who started loving tech when Mom, who worked for IBM at the time, come home with the first IBM PC. 256k RAM, 4-color RBG monitor, and two - that’s right, TWO! - double sided 5.25″ floppy drives. State of the art at that point, cost somewhere around $4,000 in early-80’s dollars. With the IBM discount. Still astounds me that I have many more times computer power in my iPhone than that old thing had 25 years ago. I learned to program in Basic and Turbo Pascal, cut my gaming teeth on Zork and King’s Quest, and began always wanting the newest gadgets. Like most kids who grew up in this time period, I studied at the altar of Star Wars and learned to love everything Sci-Fi. I was the geek kid who’d run the projector in school, kept to myself, but had more friends than I thought I did back then. Old school Dungeons and Dragons, Mech Warrior, and Weird Al were all part of my childhood. But, I think my geek-cred highlight came from being the president of the National Science Acadment in my senior year. Yes, I was the guy who lined up the college professor who came in with the liquid nitrogen and shattered flowers and bouncy balls. By that time, though, I’d started to get more into music, learning guitar and growing out my hair. i took some time as the lead guitarist in a metal band and applied my love of technology and knowing how things work to recording, getting my degree in audio and video production. When I learned that the music business sucked and I couldn’t break into the video production business, I went back to my first love - computers. Working up from 2nd and 3rd shift computer room jobs, to running a computer room, learning networking and phone systems, I finally got to where I am today, designing enterprise networks and communications systems for a major telecom company.
