If you thought the Star Wars prequel trilogy was bad…

November 18, 2008 by Andy Martin

I give you, for your viewing pleasure / displeasure,

The Star Wars Holiday Special, in it’s entirety (while it lasts on Google Video, at least). Life Day, Chewie’s family (and son “Lumpy”), Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, Jefferson Starship, and the one shining moment, the first real appearance of Boba Fett in the animated segment, all after the break.

And, yes, it is as bad as you remember it. Complete with commercials from the original 1978 broadcast. And, as a 7-year old, I’m sure I ate this up. Now, not so much. There’s a reason this was only shown once and never released on video.

    Couldn’t make 5 minutes. Life’s too short. What a travesty.

    @beth -
    I plan on watching in small doses, maybe 5 or 10 minutes at a time, about as much as I can take in one sitting. I do want to make it through, though, if for no other reason than for historical purposes and more worthless trivia. And, believe it or not, even as bad as it is, it’s still considered “canon”, or true to the Star Wars universe and mythos. I was reading about a writer of the more recent Star Wars novels who wanted to go back and change Lumpy’s backstory because she didn’t want to reference the horrible memories of this special but was not allowed.

    All that being said, when even George Lucas hates it so bad that he wants to burn all copies of this special, you know it can’t be good. Then again, he is on record saying that “Empire Strikes Back” was the worst of the original trilogy, so he obviously can’t be trusted anyway.
