What if the original “TRON” were marketed today?
March 30, 2010 by Andy Martin · Leave a Comment
With “TRON Legacy” just around the virtual corner, those of us who grew up with the original “TRON” are dusting off those DVDs and getting ready for the next part of the story nearly 30 years later. One enterprising fan, though, with a real eye for creating interest in a movie without giving the whole thing away (take note, Hollywood), decided to redo the trailer for the original “TRON” in a more modern blockbuster-movie style. Original trailer, and incredible new recut after the break. Read more

That's right, baby, I'm back!
Ok, so after about an hour of site maintenance, upgrading all the plug-ins and WordPress backend, I think we’re about ready to go again. Things have settled down to the point that I think we can start moving again here.
First of all, thanks for all the well wishes and prayers around the difficulties we’ve had this year. Read more
J.J. Abrams loves to hide Easter Eggs – The Observer in “Fringe”
December 5, 2008 by Andy Martin · Leave a Comment
One of my favorite new shows this season is “Fringe”, the new J.J. Abrams science-fiction-kinda-mystery show on Fox. It’s been called an X-Files for this generation, which I can kind of see as I used to watch the X-Files and liked the weird things they would try to figure out from week to week. Aside from Dr. Walter Bishop (singlehandedly the best thing to happen to Sci-Fi television since . . . Hurley’s “Duuuude” lines I guess), this show has the trademark Abrams nuggets that you probably miss the first time you see the show, but just amaze you when you go back for a second watch to get the details. “The Observer” is one of those awesome details. More on that, and video after the jump. Read more
If you thought the Star Wars prequel trilogy was bad…

I give you, for your viewing pleasure / displeasure,
The Star Wars Holiday Special, in it’s entirety (while it lasts on Google Video, at least). Life Day, Chewie’s family (and son “Lumpy”), Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, Jefferson Starship, and the one shining moment, the first real appearance of Boba Fett in the animated segment, all after the break. Found trivia fun – The Drake Equation
October 30, 2008 by Andy Martin · Leave a Comment
In doing some research today on astronomical topics, I came across this little gem that is the cornerstone of the belief that extraterrestrial life is out there somewhere – the Drake Equation, named for Frank Drake and published in 1960. It is what tries to estimate the number of possible extraterrestrial civilizations out there that we might come in contact with. The full equation and explanations, as well as the current estimates of the result of the equation, after the break. Read more

Bringing up little Geeklets – Halloween preparations
October 16, 2008 by Andy Martin · Leave a Comment
Last weekend, we let the kiddos try on their Halloween costumes to make sure we didn’t need to do any emergency returns or refittings before the big day of trick or treating. My little geeks-in-training make me proud, so I have to share. More pictures and commentary after the jump. Read more
When Plo Koon speaks, geeks listen – Review of Clone Wars episode “Rising Malevolence”

The Cartoon Network premiered the first two Clone Wars television episodes on Friday night, I’ve already reviewed the first episode “Ambush”, now I can take on the second episode “Rising Malevolence”. This second episode brings us back to the Anakin / Ahsoka show, but introduces Plo Koon and an awesomely frightening General Grevious into the storyline. Full episode synopsis and my reaction after the break. Read more

Site redesign coming
October 2, 2008 by Andy Martin · Leave a Comment
Well, I’ve got about 6 weeks of blogging under my belt now and getting the hang of it. I even have my first official sci-fi book review coming in the next couple of weeks (being shipped to me now, will need a week or so to read it and write my impressions) so it appears I am officially entering the professional blogosphere. To that end, I’m going to be undergoing a pretty substantial site redesign in the coming weeks to give this blog a little more of a professional sheen to it. The podcast is still on the horizon, but I want to get my core blog set up first before I start trying to add my voice to the equation. For all of you that have stopped by and liked what you have seen so far, this is only the beginning. Keep coming back for more developments, and some of the best takes on tech news, new gadgets, and sci-fi topics on the web. Thanks for your support, and Namaste.
