What if the original “TRON” were marketed today?

TRON

With “TRON Legacy” just around the virtual corner, those of us who grew up with the original “TRON” are dusting off those DVDs and getting ready for the next part of the story nearly 30 years later. One enterprising fan, though, with a real eye for creating interest in a movie without giving the whole thing away (take note, Hollywood), decided to redo the trailer for the original “TRON” in a more modern blockbuster-movie style. Original trailer, and incredible new recut after the break. Read more

What do unemployed geeks do?

Has the bunty hunting business gotten so bad?

This video tugs at every geek heart-string I have. Many people can (and do) play various instruments for money in the NYC subway system. But, there can be only one with the geek-cred that this one displays. Boba Fett . . . playing music from “The Legend of Zelda” . . . on an accordian. My geeky heart weeps with joy, if I could virtually put a dollar in his accordian case, I would. Video after the jump. Read more

TiVo Premier and Premier XL announced

TiVo Premier and Premier XL

Last week, TiVo announced the long-awaited update to their TiVo HD named the TiVo Premier and Premier XL. I still have my trusty Series 2, but it’s been getting a little long in the tooth lately and couldn’t really keep up with all of the new ways of getting media and TV shows these days. I have been experimenting with other services and HTPC setups, but I think the Premier might bring me back into the TiVo love-fest once again. Read more

Review: Energizer Flat Panel 4x Induction Charging System

March 3, 2010 by Andy Martin · Leave a Comment

Best. Geek. Valentine's Day Gift. Ever.

Tonight when I got home, I had a surprise late-Valentine’s day gift from my wonderful wife – the Energizer Flat Panel 4x induction Charging System for the Nintendo Wii. I had seen these when they were originally announced by Energizer last year before Christmas, but they only had the 2x model available up until now and I wanted to hold out for this one. My wife, knowing her geeky husband very well, managed to sneak this order through and we got the first batch shipped out by Amazon. Does it live up to my expectations? Is this the Wii charger that Nikola Tesla could truly be proud of? Read on after the jump. Read more

Site redesign coming soon

February 17, 2010 by Andy Martin · 1 Comment

I know I said I was back about a month or so ago, but I mean it this time :) Had some more personal issues crop up as I tried to fire this back up again, but now that I feel that I’ve gotten a lot of things put back together on the home and work front, I think it’s time that I pull a reboot here. Kind of like Star Trek, except that I can’t get a younger and more attractive person to play me.

Anyway, here’s what you can expect in the coming weeks. I am going to switch providers for this site, first off. I’ve learned a lot of things designing a site from scratch and using WordPress, but after not signing on for a month or two I again have massive updates I need to do on the backend with plugins and the core WordPress engine. I’m going to go to a easier-to-manage hosted solution, but still try to keep the custom-look that I worked to develop here.

Second, I’m going to keep doing the tech news and stories that I find interesting, sharing things I find with my own unique perspective added. Gadget reviews will still be high up there (got a bunch of new things to talk about here), as will reviews of sci-fi movies, TV shows, and the like. Games will still gather some attention here, but mostly around what I’m playing, what the kids are playing, and things that I’m looking forward to. Expect a dedicated World of Warcraft section, though not anywhere near in depth as some of the dedicated WoW sites. Just be about my experiences in game.

I’m going to add some other things as time permits as well, linking in to other social media sites so that you can enjoy the content I provide here in whatever form you like to use. Twitter, Facebook, Buzz, GDGT, Digg, if you already use any of these sites you’ll be able to see my stories easily. Even through a simple RSS update if that’s what floats your boat (which is usually my favorite way to get my stories, although it seems rather old-school these days). I still have a goal of doing a regular podcast of sorts that would go over some of the top things that I’d covered or topics that deserve longer attention.

Anyway, a lot of work to do here. Keep coming back as the site goes through its changes again, and GTT will become a great place to get news, reviews, and comments on tech geek life in general.

Your Geek,

Andy

Welcome back!

That's right, baby, I'm back!

That's right, baby, I'm back!

Ok, so after about an hour of site maintenance, upgrading all the plug-ins and WordPress backend, I think we’re about ready to go again. Things have settled down to the point that I think we can start moving again here.

First of all, thanks for all the well wishes and prayers around the difficulties we’ve had this year. Read more

Been a long time, been a long time…

March 1, 2009 by Andy Martin · Leave a Comment

bbc01I’ve gotten some emails from some of you out there about the fact that there hasn’t been a blog posting here in a looooooooong time. I wanted to take a moment out of everything that’s going on here and respond to some of the concerns that I’ve seemed to have dropped off the face of the earth. Well, back shortly before Christmas, the wonderful woman who loves my geekiness found a lump. Needless to say, my mind has been somewhere else for the last couple of months. Since the initial diagnosis we’ve now gone through more tests, MRIs and mammograms than I can remember, two surgeries, we start the chemo regimen this week (3/4), and radiation after that.

This blog was, and still is, very important to me. It gave me a creative outlet when I felt I needed more. Now that I have more on my plate than I can really handle, it might be a while between posts. It’s hard to get excited about tech and sci-fi when the woman you love is getting ready to go through the roughest experience of her life. I’ll gladly miss the “Watchmen” premier this weekend to be with her, no contest.

Anyway, since it had been so long since I’d checked in, and I see quite a number of new visitors here since BSG kicked off again (frak, I have to talk about that show sometime, my theories were close but didn’t quite pan out), I wanted to make sure you all knew we were still alive, which is a triumph…

J.J. Abrams loves to hide Easter Eggs – The Observer in “Fringe”

December 5, 2008 by Andy Martin · Leave a Comment

Fringe, best new sci-fi show IMO

One of my favorite new shows this season is “Fringe”, the new J.J. Abrams science-fiction-kinda-mystery show on Fox. It’s been called an X-Files for this generation, which I can kind of see as I used to watch the X-Files and liked the weird things they would try to figure out from week to week. Aside from Dr. Walter Bishop (singlehandedly the best thing to happen to Sci-Fi television since . . . Hurley’s “Duuuude” lines I guess), this show has the trademark Abrams nuggets that you probably miss the first time you see the show, but just amaze you when you go back for a second watch to get the details. “The Observer” is one of those awesome details. More on that, and video after the jump. Read more
