They don’t call it Labor Day for nothin’

Sorry for the lack of posts, yesterday me and the missus went off the the local Ikea for a few things. Nearly 3 hours later, and after having walked about 10 miles through that damn store, we got a new computer desk for the kiddos and a new office desk for me, among other smaller things. My current desk is nice, but it’s always seemed a little small and not quite my style. Not many drawers or storage, either, so I had been thinking about getting a new desk for a while. Read more
McCain/Palin could be the BSG ticket, lead to better Human/Cylon relations
August 30, 2008 by Andy Martin · 2 Comments
The writers at io9 found this gem going around originally posted by Burnlab. The resemblance is scary. I loved the original presidential ticket of Roslyn/Adama, or better yet Roslyn/Airlock, but I’m not sure she’s ready to be the VP to Col. Tigh.
*UPDATE* New post here adding Cindy McCain to the mix

The guys over at AppleInsider found some new patent filings for that long rumored Macbook Touch tablet that shed some new light on how they might plan on implementing multi-touch, an onscreen virtual keyboard, and smaller interface buttons. Pretty cool stuff. Read more
Master and Padawan go to see “Clone Wars”
August 27, 2008 by Andy Martin · 1 Comment
Last weekend, I had the honor of going on a “date” with my 7-year old daughter to see the new “Clone Wars” movie, the latest entry in the Star Wars mythology. She is a huge Star Wars geek, just like her Dad, even to the point that she describes us as Master and Padawan. We’ve read the Boba-Fett young reader books, the first few Jedi-Trial books, she has her own lightsaber, has seen all the movies (except Episode III, we’ll watch that after I edit out some of the more scary things, Crispy-Anakin, the raid on the Temple, Palpatine transforming, there’s really some disturbing stuff in that movie for my youngling), and LOVES the first two volume of the Clone Wars cartoons. She’s been looking forward to this coming out, and as a proud Dad I’ve been looking forward to seeing our first movie-theater Star Wars film together. So, with popcorn and Icee in hand, and her Leia-in-Boushh-costume 12-inch doll sitting in her lap, we waited with great anticipation at her first big-screen Star Wars experience. Read more
OpenStomp guitar effects pedal
August 26, 2008 by Andy Martin · Leave a Comment

Now, here’s an interesting piece of tech for the musicians out there. OpenStomp(TM) now has available the first “open source” guitar effects pedal called the Coyote-1. With this box, guitarists can develop “custom audio effects in software”, combine effects into patches, and share those patches with other users in a larger community. It includes a Windows application, OpenStomp Workbench, that allows guitarists to visually put their effects together and move patches between the Coyote pedal and the PC. Read more
Spy shots of 2010 Next-Gen Prius
August 23, 2008 by Andy Martin · 2 Comments

Ok, so like any geek worth his Star Wars action figures, I drive a Prius. It’s a technology and gadget freak’s dream of a car, the 7″ touch-screen to control climate, audio, real-time feedback on operation and mpg, standard Smart Key (I haven’t taken my keys out of my pocket to start my car in the 2 years I’ve owned it), and full-on electric mode (hacked, of course) where I can drive in “ninja-mode” and sneak up on people. Happy Mac is happy

Time to get back to work. We got the wife’s iMac back from the Apple Store yesterday afternoon, I spent last night after the kids conked out restoring her Time Machine backup and getting her up and running. So, today I kicked off my restore so I can get my files and desktop back. Expect more blog work tonight, maybe even the new logo if I can get my Photoshop work done. More work over the weekend, most notably my review of the new “Clone Wars” movie (taking my awesome Star Wars Padawan daughter to see it tomorrow). I’m no snobby movie critic, I usually like what they seem to hate. However, I’m also a huge Star Wars fan and have been listening to other fans’ reactions to what George Lucas is trying to feed us. It can go either way, as far as I’m concerned, should be a fun movie experience, especially seeing my Padawan’s reaction as a whole new generation of Star Wars fan.
New Samsung phone

Roving reporter Beth sent in this tip for a video to an unboxing of a new phone from Samsung. So, I guess this is what everyone else has to do to compete with the iPhone now. I gotta get me one of these!
Sad Mac is sad
August 19, 2008 by Andy Martin · Leave a Comment

Well, I had high hopes of doing more blog work tonight. Unfortunately, we have a Sad Mac and my wife will be using my Macbook Pro to run her eBay business while her iMac gets a new Bluetooth board installed. Ok, not a real “Sad Mac”, but pretty rough since she uses a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and they would just die at any given time. So, as I write the post from my iPhone I’m restoring her Time Machine backup to my Macbook Pro, which means I’m more or less without a system tonight.
Maybe I’ll play some “Smash Brothers Brawl” to placate my soul…
